We advocate for musicians and are committed to raising industry standards and to placing the music professional in the forefront of the cultural landscape.

Local 247 was formed in 1902 and is a member of the Canadian Federation of Musicians (CFM), an affiliate of the American Federation of Musicians of the United States and Canada (AFM). The AFM is the largest organization representing musicians in the world and has more than 90,000 members. It represents all types of professional musicians including those who produce music for sound recordings, film scores, videogames, radio, television, commercials and internet streaming as well as those musicians who work in every genre, in every sort of venue ranging from small clubs or lounges to symphony orchestras and theatre. It also represents music teachers, sound technicians, piano tuners, luthiers and many others who are part of the music industry.
We establish and defend professional standards, ethics, minimum fees and proper working conditions. The Island Musicians Association and the CFM assist our members by promoting employment opportunities, negotiating fair agreements with employers, providing legal contracts for musicians not covered by negotiated agreements, by protecting ownership of recorded music and by securing benefits such as pension and instrument and liability insurance.
