The CFM, along with the other members of the Creative Industries Coalition (IATSE, Actors’ Equity, and Associated Designers of Canada), have been working to find support and subsidies for artists and stagehands who are again suddenly out of work, due to the closures of significant productions, capacity limits and returns to lockdown.

A wage subsidy program has been announced by the Federal Government, but is has flaws regarding ineligibility for many self-employed gig workers (i.e. most musicians, and other workers in the arts). Here is the link for the Wage Subsidy.

The Creative Industries Coalition has written the Government with recommendations to improve the benefit proposal.

Survey for "Gig" Musicians (Freelancers)

Freelance Work Survey
The Independent Gig Musicians group is conducting a brief 1-2 minute survey to help freelance musicians identify and weigh the costs (both monetary and opportunity) vs. financial benefit for individual gigs. Filling out the optional geographic information may also help determine areas where conditions may be improved through organizing and collective action or for further follow-up and information gathering. For those who prefer social media, please click on the links at the conclusion of the survey to follow the work of these musician leaders of the Independent Gig Musicians.
Go to our Venuology Survey to participate in this survey.

Flying With Musical Instruments

Here is the new Guide to Flying with Musical Instruments in Canada, prepared
by the AFM/CFM. The CFM has worked along with the Minister of Transport, the Canadian Transportation Agency, the Air Transport Association of Canada, and others, to improve musicians rights and the airlines obligations with regard to
flying with musical instruments in Canada.

BC CFM Locals are lobbying the Government

Local 247 and Local 145, along with IATSE, Associated Designers of Canada, and Actors Equity have formed a coalition to work together on the challenges facing arts professionals who work independently in the gig economy. We have talked with federal and provincial government officials about support for the unique problems facing arts professionals, and have submitted White Papers containing proposals in advance of the upcoming provincial budget cycle.
